Happy August! Now that summer is winding down, we’re thinking about back-to-school—and specifically, to college. This month, we’re talking about a new trend we’ve been seeing lately: Families taking special trips with their college-bound kids. And speaking of bonding travel, we’re also highlighting our recent retreat in Puerto Rico—including our top hosting tips. And finally, rounding out this edition is a great Q&A with Qatar Airways, which was recently honored with the distinction of “World’s Best Airline.” We hope the rest of your summer is fun and relaxing!

Whether you’re spending your whole trip to South Africa in Cape Town or just passing through, no visit would be complete without enjoying the city’s outstanding food scene. Along with its sophisticated style and gorgeous outdoor surroundings, Cape Town offers lots for diners, from great wine (be sure to try the local Pinotage!) to amazing restaurants. Here are few can’t miss choices in the city and nearby Constantia.
Stroll down Bree Street
You can’t talk about the Cape Town food scene without mentioning Bree Street—a go-to place for fun, trendy spots. Whether you’re there for your morning coffee (try coffee at Dapper Coffee Co), for lunch (there’s SMAK and lots of others), on the hunt for a glass of wine (Publik is one choice) or having dinner before heading back to your hotel, there are a slew of interesting and dynamic restaurants.
Visit The Old Biscuit Mill
With a tagline like “where Cape Town meets for culinary delights and fine local designs” how can you not head to this food and design destination while visiting the city? Once a working biscuit factory (hence the name), this spot has everything you could want—from a chocolate shop to art studios to a Saturday market to gourmet restaurants.
Try Truth Coffee
Whether you’re a coffee drinker, prefer tea or could leave both in favor of dessert, there’s something for you at this Cape Town coffee bar, which has been dubbed one of “the world’s best coffee shops” by England’s The Telegraph. Along with coffee, they offer High Tea, as well as Truth. After Dark, starting after 6 p.m., where you can score amazing desserts created by a Michelin-starred pastry chef.
Eat—and Enjoy the Art—at Blanko Restaurant
Housed inside the Alphen Hotel in Constantia—about a 20 minute drive from Cape Town—this hip restaurant offers pasta, pizza, meat, and seafood options, including kingklip and grilled swordfish. While it’s easy to get absorbed in the great food, be sure to take in the art, created by South African artists. The restaurant is part of The Kove Collection, which has numerous restaurants and properties in its South African portfolio.
Stay at The Cellars-Hohenort
At this Relais & Châteaux property in Constantia, you’ll find a few different restaurant and bar options, including The Conservatory, which overlooks amazing gardens and The Martini Bar. But the standout is The Greenhouse, which was chosen by local chefs as one of the best special occasion restaurants in the area. With a focus on local food, there are also tasting menus and wine pairings offered.
